Intense Pulsed Light Treatments (IPL) in Cambridge
We use Pulsed Light to treat Vascular and Pigmented lesions on the skin.
Pigmented Lesions include "sun spots", "liver spots" or "age spots". This is sun damage of the skin and can be treated with IPL treatments. The pulses of filtered light are absorbed by the melanin in the pigmented lesions. The light heats the pigment and breaks it up. The lesions darken and crust after treatment and are naturally shed from the skin after approximately 10 days.
Vascular Lesions include "Telangectasia" which are little blood vessels on the facial skin (also called spider veins) and "Rosacea" which is generalized redness of the skin. In this case the pulses of filtered light are absorbed by the blood in the vascular lesions. The light pulses heat the small capillaries that cause rosacea, telangectasia, and other vascular lesions. The heat shrinks these capillaries which may redden or become grey after treatment. They then fade form view in approximately 10 days.
The treatments are not painful. A mild heat sensation is felt and most patients do not find it uncomfortable. There is temporary redness and a mild "sunburn" like sensation that may last a few hours.
Patients usually have between one and three IPL treatments. Often one is sufficient to treat the most troubling and obvious lesions. IPL treatment is very safe and side effects are rare and usually temporary. In inexperienced hands these can include burning, scarring or hyper or hypo pigmentation. At Dr Takhar's Cosmetic Clinic IPL treatments are performed personally by Dr Takhar who has over 16 years experience in cosmetic dermatology.
It is important to understand that skin care is a lifelong process and any medical treatment should be accompanied by a good skin care regime and adequate use of sunscreen. We will provide you with after care advice to maintain your "new look".
