Feel Good about Looking Great
We all want to look good. But what is looking good? In reality most people crave the "perfect skin" and by this we mean clear, flawless radiant skin. The desire to have clear skin transcends all races, ages and applies to both men and women. Fortunately we now have at our disposal non invasive techniques to get the best look possible.
The commonest issues are "dull" looking skin, a tired appearance, pimples, sun damaged spots, wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven skin, marks left over from acne, loss of skin tone, uneven skin texture and firmness, and broken blood vessels.
Who hasn't noticed that children tend to have clear beautiful skin? So what happens as we get older and what can be done about it? Here is a list of what damages the skin.
Genetics - Unfortunately some of us are predisposed to worse skin than others.
Age - Every decade causes a decrease in the amount of "exfoliation" leading to dead cells on the surface and hence the dull appearance. The older one gets the more dull the skin appears.
Sun - However good a sun tan may look, it definitely is the cause of early wrinkles, sun damaged spots, uneven tone and of course skin cancer.
Smoking, drinking and pollutants in the air.
Dehydration
Hormones - The number one cause of acne and break outs
Gravity - Causes skin to sag and wrinkles to develop.
Poor Products - Low quality cleansers, toners, creams, and make up.
Diet - A healthy diet and good weight control is essential to good skin
Stress - Lack of sleep, and a generally stressful life takes its toll
The problems that occur in the skin can be classified by age. This does not apply to everyone and some 30 yr olds have the problems of a typical 40 yr old and vise versa.
Here follows the typical changes at each age and the recommended remedies.
20's At this age, aside from those with persistant acne which has to be dealt with specifically, the commonest issue is that the level of exfoliation is not sufficient to maintain the youthful fresh look of the teens. This is because the skin cellular turnover slow down. At this point a medically recommended good home skin regime based on medical grade products can be sufficient.
30's At this age, although medical grade products are essential, further action is also warranted. Due to the layers of "stuck-on" dead cells and very early sun damage, a regimen of medically supervised skin peels can do wonders and help reverse years of damage. This improves the skin tome and texture.
40's At this time more noticeable lines and wrinkles appear and there can be some loss of firmness and definition. Often higher grade products containing anti-aging chemicals is required, as well as a series of peels. Some people may benefit from use of wrinkle treatments such as Botox and Restylane.
50's The skin tends to become drier and there is loss of collagen and elastin. Intense hydration creams as well as those to firm and tone the skin are very beneficial. Laser treatments for age spots as well as skin lightening creams can help. Botox can certainly turn the clock back and give a much younger refreshed appearance.
60+ The skin develops a papery thin appearance and fragile look. Once again appropriate products combined with specific targeted laser treatments and a combination of fillers and botox can be most beneficial.
At all ages one of the most important items to use is a good sun screen. It is advisable that it is SPF 30. The sunscreen in make-up only lasts about 20 minutes before it breaks down so it can not be relied upon. One should use a sunscreen that contains UVA and UVB protection and contains anti-oxidants against free radicals.
Everyone can look their best with proper and regular skin care. With the advent of medical grade products and glycolic acid peels, women are empowered to take advantage of the best treatments for their specific skin concerns.
Fortunately, not only are these treatments non-invasive and cost-effective but unlike cosmetic grade products, they actually work! A strong endorsement for medical grade products is that once women are introduced to these innovative products they never again waste a penny on cosmetic grade products.Dr. Deepa Takhar
