Acne Treatment in Cambridge : Achieving Flawless Skin
Only the very fortunate get away with never having a "pimple" in their life. A whole range of skin issues are under the umbrella term "Acne" which can become both a physical and an emotional condition.
Dr Takhar, a local Family Physician, also trained in Cosmetic Dermatology deals with patients of all ages with the common complaint of acne. "Fortunately in this day and age, a lot can be done to minimize and even eradicate the condition" she says.
Acne is actually a range of skin problems from a blackhead or two to the worst cases of scarring cystic acne. "No single treatment fits every case, and no over the counter therapy is strong enough to make anyone but the mildest cases of acne patients better" says Dr Takhar, who is also the medical director of Dr Takhar's Cosmetic Clinic, a state of the art cosmetic clinic which specializes in creating smooth flawless skin.
Acne treatment starts with a medical assessment of the skin. Prescription grade products containing retinol can often deal with mild acne. For moderate acne, prescription products combined with glycolic peels can significantly improve the skin and prevent further breakouts.
The latest scientific breakthrough for acne treatment is using the power of light to kill the acne bacteria. IPL laser treatments allow significant clearing with no side effects, irritation, photosensitivity or down time.
In Dr Takhar's opinion what many doctors fail to realize is the huge psychological damage that even the mildest acne can inflict on a patient. "We all aspire to beautiful skin, and now that it is scientifically possible to achieve, no-one should have to live with the physical and emotional scars of acne."
No discussion of Acne is complete without mentioning Accutane. Accutane is a powerful derivative of Vitamin A and is licensed for use in very severe acne. Patients should be carefully selected for this extremely potent medication. Although it can have severe and serious side effects, it can be a blessing for many patients. Fortunately, for most patients milder and less invasive treatments are sufficient to achieve significant improvement.

Acne : Pulsed Light Treatments
Acne occurs when pores become clogged with dead skin cells and excess sebum. This provides an ideal medium for bacteria to multiply causing pimples and inflammation. Acne generally begins in puberty but can occur at any time.
How does Pulsed Light Treatment work?
Pulses of filtered light are directed into the skin where they destroy bacteria to clear current acne breakouts. The light pulses also slowdown the production of sebum, which can get clogged in the pores- this prevents future acne breakouts.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments depends upon the severity of the acne. We usually recommend between 6 & 8 treatments at a frequency of two per week.
What happens after the acne treatment?
Your skin may be slightly red after treatment like a milk sunburn. The acne blemishes shrink and become less noticeable and then fade after approximately one week.
Will the treatments hurt?
A milk warm sensation like sunburn is felt. Most patients do not find the treatments uncomfortable.
Are there any side effects?
In experienced hands the side effects of IPL treatments are rare and usually temporary. Dr Takhar has over 16 years experience in cosmetic dermatology.
It is important to understand that skin care is a life long process. All treatments must be accompanied by a good skin care regime and adequate use of sun screen. We will provide you with after care advice to maintain your improved skin.
